SIGN (Scottish Intercollegiate Guideline Network) has published a patient information booklet to accompany the clinical guideline SIGN 147 Management of chronic heart failure.

This booklet explains the recommendations set out in the clinical guideline, which is based on current medical research, and the care patients may need if they have chronic heart failure. There is also some advice based on the the opinion of healthcare professionals who are trained on how best to manage patient care.

The patient booklet includes a useful section with contact details of organisations that can provide further information about chronic heart failure. The key points explained in the booklet are:

  • what chronic heart failure is
  • what it causes
  • what the symptoms are
  • how it is diagnosed
  • how it is treated, and
  • what patients can do to help themselves.

This is the first of six patient booklets that will be issued by SIGN, between 2016 and 2018, that cover various conditions within Chronic Heart Disease.
